Electric Vehicle Repair: Tesla Model 3/Y Battery Coolant Outlet Replacement

Tesla batteries are tough, with a thick underside that can withstand being driven or dragged over all kinds of obstacles. The battery pack in the Model 3 and Model Y have a weak spot, though: their plastic coolant outlets. Also called “coolant nipples”, “passthroughs” or “coolant adapters”, these plastic fittings serve as the connection point for the battery cooling hoses. If a large enough object gets caught underneath the car, it can crack – or completely break off – these fittings. When that happens, the only solution offered by a Tesla service centre is a replacement battery pack.

Doing it Right

We are not the first service centre to repair a broken Model 3/Y battery coolant outlet and save the client thousands of dollars. A quick Google search will yield multiple stories of repair shops and DIYers alike that have “repaired” these fittings, often by cutting them off and tapping or gluing in some sort of pipe nipple, then finding a way to adapt the coolant hose to this. These simply aren’t repairs that, as licensed and insured professionals, we could confidently – or safely – offer. If a DIY coolant outlet repair fails, the best case scenario is that your Tesla has a coolant leak. The worse case? Coolant leaks inside the battery pack and causes a catastrophic fire.

The only safe and guaranteed way to repair a broken coolant outlet is to remove the battery pack, open it for a complete inspection and then replace the broken outlets with genuine OEM parts.

While this repair still represents a significant expense, it usually comes in at roughly 25% of the cost of a new battery and under half the installed cost of a used replacement. Aside from the savings, our repair offers several other advantages compared to DIY options:

• Passes the Tesla high voltage inspection: If your vehicle is ever in a serious accident including an air bag deployment, it may need to undergo a Tesla high voltage inspection to re-enable Supercharger access. Any non-OEM repairs will fail this inspection and at that point, the vehicle will be flagged as requiring a complete battery pack replacement to pass.
